ASMT - 104 Validity and Reliability Essentials

The ’Validity and Reliability Essentials’ micro-credential provides evidence that the learner has demonstrated knowledge of validity and reliability in the realm of educational assessment. This micro-credential focuses on the importance of validity and reliability of assessments in higher education, the types of threats to validity, and establishing reliability.

This micro-credential is in the Academic Assessment Series, which consists of five modules focusing on foundational aspects of academic assessment and continuous improvement.

Upon completion of this micro-credential, learners will be able to:

• Articulate why it is important to ensure assessments of student learning are valid and reliable. 

• Describe the three tasks that should be completed to lay the foundation for the validity evidence argument. 

• Identify types of evidence that might be used to demonstrate the validity of course or program assessments. 

• Select the reliability measure most appropriate for a given context and design of an assessment. 

• Complete an online learning material on assessing and strengthening the reliability and validity of an assessment.
• Submit one of the following assignments: a table of specifications, calculation of content validity using the Lawshe method, generated validity evidence for an assessment, or an item-level diagnostic on a test using skills gained from the module.
• Attend a synchronous learning session to demonstrate an understanding of Educational Assessment, Assessment Validity, and Assessment Reliability. The assessment team provides qualitative feedback on the learner’s prior assignment during the synchronous session. Following the session, participants are provided the opportunity to submit the final version and a rubric is used to share additional feedback.
• Submit a final quiz. If learners receive less than 80% on the quiz, they are prompted to retake the quiz.
